Meet the team: 3 questions with yacht designer Louis Quin Rommel

Eery month we put 3 questions to one of our yachting industry professional. This time, we caught up with Louis Quin Rommel, yacht designer of Mulder Design

1: How did you get into the yachting industry?

Initially, the yachting industry was totally unknown to me. It was through my two passions – interior design and architecture – that I discovered this world. Yacht design quickly became an obvious choice in my career path, combining technical expertise, aesthetics and creativity. I was fascinated by the freedom of expression offered by this sector, where each project is a unique work of art. Over and above the technical complexity, I was particularly attracted by the ability to transform a vision into something tangible and faithful to the initial concept.

2: What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?

Our job is full of challenges. Each project involves fine-tuned management of multiple constraints: space, structure, regulations, ergonomics and aesthetic expectations. It’s often a question of striking a subtle balance between innovation, functionality and elegance. What makes the work exciting is precisely this constant search for creative solutions to complex problems. My aim is always to identify the ‘signature detail’ – the innovative element that will bring real added value to the project – while meeting the requirements of a sector that is both demanding and traditional. Creating emotion and making customers dream remains at the heart of my approach.

3: What’s your favourite quote?
‘Architecture is a work of art, a phenomenon that arouses emotions beyond the problems of construction. Construction is about holding things together; architecture to inspire.’
