Challenges MY Ursus

Ursus came with a particular set of challenges. In its original form Ursus was rather compact, like a tiny Big Ship. Lengthening the waterline would help it go faster, save fuel and improve coursekeeping. But extending its hull shape to meet the new vertical bow meant having to cut as far back as possible. The engine room at midship needed to remain intact, so the existing hull was cut just ahead of that.

The e-boat revolution starts here

BM: If the boat is for a specific client, we begin with a brief for a full understanding of the mission.

Building Good Boats from the Bottom Up

Frank Mulder’s professional background began with working in a shipyard – Amels – where his “office” was a niche in the wall of a construction shed and his first job out of university in 1974 was as Assistant Yard Manager scheduling production. Two years later he was offered a post as a naval architect by Damen and made head of its high-speed division for military and commercial craft. Three years after that, he made the brash decision at age 28 to quit the safety of a career at Damen and open his own studio. That type of “sink or swim” decision is characteristic of the senior Mulder.

Building on Success and Sound Principles

Bas Mulder was 1 year old when he accompanied his father on a tank test. He participated in sea trials on Dillinger in 1991, fully 9 years before he officially joined the firm. Now owner of Mulder Design, he describes how the studio is moving with the times along with project manager Marc van der Werf who also looks after business development.
