The ideal mix of experience and forward-thinking enthusiasm

Mulder Design revolves around more than the Mulder family alone! We are proud to have built up an exceptionally strong team of specialists from across the disciplines of design, naval architects and naval engineering. The ideal mix of past experience and forward-thinking enthusiasm allows us to cater for all client tastes and requests. We look forward to meeting you in person!

Owner - Naval Architect

BAS MULDER

When it comes to boating being in the blood, Bas Mulder – owner of the Mulder Design studio – can fairly claim to be the archetype. Raised around the design, construction and operation of yachts, he has followed in his father Frank Mulder’s footsteps to continue the family tradition at the frontier of naval architecture and yachtbuilding – hardly surprising considering their major involvement in the construction of projects such as world’s fastest superyacht The World Is Not Enough, which was launched in 2004 and which, at 42 metres, was capable of topping out at 67 knots.

These days, the Mulder Design team covers a vast array of projects, from sublime 10-metre daycruisers to stunning 100-metre superyachts, combining naval architecture, creative flair and construction design to create highly desirable, meticulously engineered vessels.

The Mulder Design studio covers not just styling but also engineering and naval architecture combined with real-world construction experience. How does that shape your approach to a project?

Having multidisciplinary expertise is key, because our aim is always to design and develop something feasible. It’s a creative path, but we also keep mind that you have to be able to build it, and be able to build it in an economically viable way. Sure, you can do crazy things with design but that’s not our goal. We are split 50/50 as a studio between yacht design and styling, and being a naval architecture and engineering office.

Office Manager & Public Relations

Kim Mulder-Struik

For Kim, a good day at Mulder Design starts with a coffee upstairs, a quick chat with Bas, and Ruby the office dog spreading some love. As Office Manager, she wears many hats – from HR and accounts to PR, client contact and event organisation – all while making sure the team of nine stays connected and supported.

Kim is passionate about building a strong company culture. Whether it’s organising Dutch celebrations, discussing what colleagues need to perform at their best, or teaming up with marketing manager Anco Kok on major events like the Monaco Yacht Show, she thrives on creating good vibes and keeping communication flowing.

Her motto? “Work hard, play hard.” For Kim, success means striving for excellence together, then celebrating those achievements as a team – whether in the office or during the long days (and sore feet!) of the Monaco Yacht Show.

Project Leader & Naval Architect

Jan Willem Frederikze

Jan Willem Frederikze didn’t originally plan on entering the yacht industry. While preparing for graduation, his professor reassigned all preferred projects, and that unexpected twist led him to discover a field that was far from dull. Instead of catering only to the privileged, he found an industry that is dynamic, innovative, and full of challenges — and he has been hooked ever since.

His proudest moment came when the very first yacht he designed as a naval architect, largely on his own, performed beautifully at sea. To this day, he still refers to it as “my baby” — a true milestone in his career.

When asked what advice he would give to newcomers, Jan Willem keeps it simple: work hard, but don’t overdo it. Mistakes will happen — fix them and learn from them. Above all, stay honest, because people will value you for it.

Project Leader, Yacht Designer & Naval Architect

René Konrad

For René Konrad, the love of yachts began in childhood while sailing the Adriatic Sea with his family. Those summers sparked endless curiosity about boats: why they were designed a certain way, what made one solution better than another, and whether choices were driven by trends or by true innovation. Determined to find the answers, René set out to make yacht design and naval architecture his life’s work.

As Project Leader at Mulder Design, he now channels that passion into guiding both people and projects. The most challenging — and rewarding — part of his role lies in balancing the strengths of the team, optimising the design process, and meeting deadlines without ever losing sight of quality.

When asked who he would most like to hire, René keeps it simple: people who share his passion for yachts, who are eager to grow their skills, and who get excited about creating exceptional projects together.

Marine Engineer

Sven Hoogervorst

For Sven Hoogervorst, boats have always been part of life. Growing up surrounded by water, he spent countless days cruising through the canals of Leiden and Amsterdam, across lakes, and into the countryside. Those moments on the water remain his favorite, along with restoring boats together with his brother. This lifelong passion for boats, combined with a love for technology, naturally led him to study Marine Engineering and pursue a career in the yachting industry.

His favorite quote captures that spirit perfectly:
“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a boat.”

Looking back on the Monaco Yacht Show 2024, Sven sums up the experience in three words: stunning, teambuilding, networking — a perfect reflection of both the industry and his journey at Mulder Design.

Yacht Designer

Louis Quin Rommel

For Louis Quin Rommel, yacht design was not an obvious starting point. With a background and passion for interior design and architecture, he discovered the yachting world later on — and it quickly became the perfect match. Combining technical expertise, creativity, and aesthetics, Louis was drawn to the freedom of expression in yacht design, where every project is a unique work of art. What inspires him most is transforming a vision into something tangible while staying true to the original concept.

The role comes with many challenges: balancing limited space, complex structures, regulations, ergonomics, and client expectations. For Louis, that complexity is exactly what makes the work so exciting. He constantly seeks the “signature detail” — an innovative element that brings extra value to the yacht while meeting the industry’s high standards. Above all, his goal is to create emotion and deliver designs that make clients dream.

A quote that guides his work comes from architecture:
“Architecture is a work of art, a phenomenon that arouses emotions beyond the problems of construction. Construction is about holding things together; architecture to inspire.”

Yacht Designer

Christiaan van Loenen

As a Dutchman with a lifelong fascination for vehicles, mobility, and boats, Christiaan van Loenen was naturally drawn to the yachting industry. For him, yacht design perfectly combines creativity and engineering with the freedom of the open water. What excites him most is turning initial sketches into beautiful, functional vessels — a process that continues to inspire him every day.

Balancing aesthetics, functionality, and feasibility is one of Christiaan’s biggest challenges. A design might look impressive on paper, but ensuring it can be built without losing its appeal is where the real expertise comes in.

His proudest moment so far? Seeing a 44 ft yacht he designed touch the water for the very first time. Joining the maiden test run, watching it reach full speed, and sharing that success with his team was a truly magical experience. For Christiaan, moments like these — when vision becomes reality — are what make yacht design so meaningful.

Yacht Designer & Naval Architect

José Luis Olmos

Growing up in Cartagena, on Spain’s eastern coast, José Luis Olmos was surrounded by the sea. From his window he could see boats of every shape and size — from small fishing vessels to large, luxurious yachts. That daily view inspired his curiosity and set him on the path toward naval architecture. After completing his degree, José moved to the UK to specialize in yacht design, a field that had always fascinated him.

What he enjoys most about the industry is also what makes it most challenging: every project is unique. Superyachts are highly customized, which means each design requires fresh solutions and new ways of thinking. For José, this constant variety keeps the work exciting and rewarding.

He joined Mulder Design in July, right after finishing his studies, and has already contributed to a range of projects — from engineering design for a radar mast to preliminary weight calculations. He also experienced his very first Monaco Yacht Show, marking an exciting start to his journey with the team.

Naval Engineer

Simon van den Berg

From a young age, Simon was drawn to the water. At just 15, he was already working weekends at a watersports company, repairing and installing boats. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a passion, and eventually into a career. Supported by technical studies and hands-on internships, Simon combined his love for engineering, design, and boats into the profession he pursues today.

When asked about the challenges of his work, Simon points to the fine balance between form and function. Whether it’s a telescopic roof or pantographic door, he thrives on finding creative solutions that merge precision, usability, and aesthetics within the tight spaces of a yacht.

His advice for newcomers to the industry? Stay curious. Ask questions, experiment, and embrace mistakes as valuable lessons. For Simon, every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow — and that mindset continues to shape his journey at Mulder Design.
