Moonraker
When Moonraker (P573) completed her sea trials off the coast of Norway in June 1992, she made maritime history by reaching an astonishing top speed of 66.7 knots, earning the title of world’s fastest mega yacht. This remarkable achievement would stand for twelve years until 2004, when another Mulder Design creation, ‘World Is Not Enough’, narrowly eclipsed her record at 67 knots.
world's fastest mega yacht
Measuring 35.36 meters in length overall (116 feet) with a waterline length of 28.25 meters, Moonraker represents a groundbreaking collaboration between Mulder Design of Holland, who served as both yacht designer and naval architect, Studio Art-Line Holland for interior design, and Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Eikefjord AS. Her classification by Det Norske Veritas underscores her quality and seaworthiness.
The yacht’s extraordinary performance stems from an innovative hybrid propulsion system combining two MTU 16V396TB94 diesel engines, each producing 3,480 horsepower at 2,100 rpm, with a Textron Lycoming TF40 gas turbine. This powerful configuration enables a cruising speed of 58 knots while maintaining a respectable range of 2,700 nautical miles at a conservative 12 knots.
What truly sets Moonraker apart is her revolutionary hull design. The special lightweight fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) hull features a continuously changing shape that was extensively tank-tested and analyzed through sophisticated computer modeling to determine precise load distribution across every surface area. This meticulous engineering resulted in a structure that is simultaneously light, exceptionally strong, and remarkably efficient.
a testament to the pinnacle of yacht design
Her unique trim tab system represents another technological breakthrough, delivering dramatic performance improvements and fuel efficiency across her entire speed range while providing automatic stabilization. Remarkably, even at high speeds, Moonraker delivers a quieter and smoother ride than most conventional displacement-speed yachts.
The superstructure showcases equally impressive craftsmanship, hand-shaped from foam before being sheathed in fiberglass to create a complex, aesthetically striking form that maintains the same principles of lightweight strength evident throughout the vessel. From her state-of-the-art bridge to her immaculate engine room, every mechanical system and engineering space reflects both beauty and functionality, with equipment of the highest caliber throughout.
Moonraker remains a testament to the pinnacle of yacht design and construction—a vessel where speed, elegance, versatility, and functionality converge in perfect harmony.
