Octopussy
In 1988, American entrepreneur John Staluppi set an ambitious goal: to commission a superyacht capable of breaking through the legendary 50-knot barrier. The result was Octopussy (P342), an aluminum masterpiece built by the renowned Dutch yard Heesen Yachts and Diagship to a design by Gerhard Gilgenast, with naval architecture by Mulder Design and interiors by Art-Line.
fastest megayacht in the world
Delivered in 1988, Octopussy spectacularly fulfilled Staluppi’s vision by achieving a record-breaking top speed of 53.17 knots, claiming the title of fastest megayacht in the world—a distinction she would hold from May 1988 until January 1992. Measuring 40.25 meters in length overall (132’6″) with a waterline of 32.95 meters (108’1″), her remarkable performance was powered by three MTU 16V396TB94 engines, each generating 3,500 horsepower, enabling a cruising speed of 50 knots while maintaining a range of 2,800 nautical miles at 12 knots.
In 1996, Octopussy underwent a comprehensive refit and extension that would transform her character. The hull was lengthened by approximately 3 meters (10 feet) to accommodate a tender garage, while the main deck received a striking addition: a circular dining room with panoramic views. The salon and galley were enlarged to enhance onboard comfort, and the sun deck was extended to incorporate a spacious sunbathing area complete with a Jacuzzi. This transformation also included a new blue hull finish, giving the yacht a fresh, distinctive appearance when she was relaunched in May 1996.
While these modifications enhanced her luxury amenities and functionality, the additional weight resulted in a performance trade-off, causing Octopussy to drop from the ranks of the world’s fastest motor yachts. However, what she sacrificed in pure speed, she gained in comfort and versatility.
a significant chapter in the history of high-performance yachting
The yacht’s aluminum construction, certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), ensures both strength and efficiency. Octopussy comfortably accommodates up to 10 guests across five luxurious suites: one owner’s cabin, three double cabins, and one twin cabin. A professional crew of up to six ensures every aspect of the yacht experience meets the highest standards of luxury and service.
Octopussy remains a significant chapter in the history of high-performance yachting, representing the era when designers and builders pushed the boundaries of speed while maintaining the elegance and comfort expected of a world-class superyacht.
